Close The Distance

I learned the lesson of taking a punch early in life. Growing up, my friends and I purchased one set of boxing gloves, yes one set. We didn’t have much money. We would spar in the streets, each of us with one glove. The fights often ended on the  ground with the one free hand trying to grab and pull at what ever limb presented itself. I learned quickly that hanging in the “X”was the worst thing I could do. I needed to close the distance, get in close and end the fight. Inaction in any fight is a sure way to see you lose. Closing in to what seems will be the most painful of alternatives is what needs to be done. Its symbolic of what we need to do in our daily lives, getting close to the things that make us uncomfortable. Keep challenges close and close the distance.

In comes Jiu Jitsu, you can’t get much closer than this. It’s a fighting style which forces you to get comfortable close. It’s using leverage and strategy to wear out your opponent, hopefully getting him to tap out or pass out. Learning a new fighting style is my way of closing the distance and getting outside of my comfort zone. First thing you realize after “rolling” with your opponent is Jiu Jitsu hurts. Getting arm bared, choked or slowly smothered by another man can teach you valuable lessons. The words “yeah, don’t do that” pop into my head as soon as I see ceiling and feel my opponent get into a position to finish me off. Its a game of strategy, and when done correctly it can almost be therapeutic.

I’ve been often humbled in this venture. Often times finding myself out performed by men much smaller than me. My strength only goes so far. Technique and skill win the match. Being choked out by an opponent forces you to swallow your ego quick. It’s good to be humbled, and to be humbled often. Those that haven’t been humbled in a long time are often in a stagnant state of learning. If you’re not getting your ass kicked in the gym, in a match or in any challenge odds are you are not pushing yourself, you’ve gotten comfortable and comfort can be dangerous.

What you’ll often find in most martial artists is they’ve been humbled and understand that there is always someone faster, stronger and better. This drives the martial artist to improve and stay committed to their path. You rarely see a “cocky” fighter, at one point in a true fighters life, they’ve been humbled. This is what I’ve found in my new dojo,  a group of guys that aren’t trying to prove something to anyone but themselves and will help you in any way they can. Even if it means choking you out to teach you a valuable lesson, trust me you learn quick.

Everyday I train, I leave spent. All of my available energy is left on the mat. My body often aches as I hobble into my truck. There are many that will tell you “you’ll get injured doing that” and that may be true. But, what is the alternative? Injuries will heal, they will get better. What will not heal is a life lived in comfort due to fear. As I finish writing this I am nursing a knee injury that will take me out of the game for quite sometime. But, as soon as it heals I’ll be back in.

There is something in all men, the desire to have the ability to fight. Even the most passive of men have the internal switch. It’s programmed into us from years of fighting to survive and now in our civilized world we seek that challenge. It’s something that should be embraced to a point. With kids being slowly  deprived of physical expression and being taught not to fight back  we need this now more than ever. Our kids need to understand a physical confrontation and be comfortable in one, to defend themselves.

Nothing teaches you more about yourself than a fight. And, learning any form of fighting is good for us. It builds us, and it builds strong relationships with these we train with. Nothing like getting your ass kicked with your buddies. Just like my childhood friends and I. We were very close friends. But, we also enjoyed kicking the crap out of each other. I was never the best fighter, I honestly lost more fights than I won as a kid; however, I always learned something from each altercation. Conflict is a valuable element to understand in our current society. In an era where most altercations start and end on the internet we miss this, it becomes an abstract thought. So, close the distance. Expose yourself to the things that may feel uncomfortable or uneasy, cause odds are those are the things you need to work on. As I’ve heard several times “Die Living”.

  1. Indeed . Once again you’ve targeted a topic of unrelenting importance. Training and the Martial Way. Most people think of the Martial Arts as Flying Kicks and large sweeping blocks. Guys flying thru the air and doing impossible stunts. Movies and TV making the actions seem like super hero stuff when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.
    Living in the Martial way is a frame of reference to guide your life. Its a set of codes and ethics that assist you and point you in the direction of your heart. Martial training isn’t just one action its a life time of commitment to making yourself and the world around you better this commitment is unwavering.. Yes undeniably its thousands of hours in the DoJo practicing moves and Katas and learning and training along side your brothers and sisters and fighting but that is only one part of the Martial Way.

    On my refrigerator is a colored 5×8 card that simply says “Train everyday to Live” its been there for many many years and on many many different refrigerator’s. It was a simple sentence said to me by a Ranger in 1986 training for the Best Ranger competition. It was never about being the best Ranger it was for him about being the best HIM he could be. Training everyday in the things that matter is the key to strength , health and happiness. It is my truest belief that the day I stop training is the day I start getting old, the day Ill start to die and I’m nowhere ready for that.

    Living the Martial way is personal Honor everyday. Its a direction set by your beliefs and goals. Its a dedication to the DoJo and your team even when its been a long day and your tired or you know you’ve only slept 5 hours and after class your heading to work for another 10 hour pull. The real test isn’t the good days its the bad ones. Like parenting its the challenging times that we learn the most about ourselves.

    I’ve trained almost every day of my life . When I was in 6th grade I was looking for a direction to follow in my life. I felt lost and unsure. Unclear of my way. An injury to my left eye caused the Dr. to tell my mom to make me read an hour a day to save the muscles in my covered eye. For 3 months I wore a patch which as you can imagine separated me even more for the world around me. Completely by accident I read a Book. A book that is on my self today. A book I’ve read many times. ” Secrets of the Samurai”. In those page’s I found more than history I found the way. My Way. I’ve never looked back and it has served me well throughout my entire life . Karate, Kendo, Aikido , Go Ju, all were steps along the path. Directing my decision and guiding my goals and directions. A lifetime of wonder, travel, and adventure to be had from the pursuit of the Martial way.

    Recently I started studying a brand new style of Okinawan Karate called Isshinryu. Its hard Fast and in your face. Powerful and geared to infighting. The philosophy is step in and take the punch knowing your attack will be more devastating.. The best part of the two work outs each week is that I’m training alongside my youngest Son Drake.
    I spent years telling him “Anyone can be a Hero in a Video game “SHOW me you can be one in real life and he has.
    Did I mention I’m 62 years old? I train with weights, I do yoga for flexibility and I push myself everyday. I always have because its the right way for me………………. The Martial Way….
    If your interested the best book I’ve ever read on the Martial spirit is…….Living the Martial Way by Forrest E. Morgan , Maj USAF retired.. the book was a xmas gift for my library from my son Steven 3 years ago. I never stop reading it.

  2. As you know, Efrin, I base my life around being honorable and teaching what I know. This always applies to an opponent or teacher I am sparing with. I’ve learned to respect their level of knowledge whether it is under, even or above my own. This does not mean pull punches or fain away from contact, I go in “guns blazing” win, lose or draw. My actions have Resulted in various bruises, aches, pains or sprains. I wouldn’t change a thing. Muscle memory, knowledge and experience are most valuable and have served me well.
